Berttie Martin Fesmire, age 99, son of Felix and Etta Rhodes Fesmire was born, February 23, 1916 in Jackson, Tennessee passed peacefully away January 25, 2016 at his home surrounded by family in Alachua, Florida.
Berttie was born in Jackson Tennessee, receiving his education in Jackson's local schools and attending Union University. He joined Southern Bell after serving in the National Guard and came to Jacksonville as a Division Plant Manager from Raleigh, North Carolina in 1964. He retired from Southern Bell after 45 years of service. He was very active in civic affairs being a member of the Board of Directors of the Exchange Club of South Jacksonville, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Administrative Board of St.Paul United Methodist Church, where he led adult bible study classes, and was the President of Terry Parker High School PTA. He previously served as a member of the Board of Directors of the T.B. Association, the Capital Area Development Association and Occoncechee Council of Boy Scouts of America and as Vice President of the Raleigh, North Carolina Rotary Club. He was a lifetime telephone Pioneer, Shriner and a 50 year 32nd degree Mason. He loved to play golf.
Berttie was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years Elizabeth(Jewell) Jones Fesmire and 10 siblings: Martha, Floyd, Walter, Elisa(Callie), John, Ruth, Euther, Felix, Thompsie, and Elvis(Vincent) Fesmire.
He is survived by; his son Berttie Martin Fesmire, Jr (Ann), daughter Ellen Elizabeth Fesmire (Sam Crummer), and two granddaughters Rachel Quintana and Sara Quintana..
A Celebration of Life will be held graveside at 10:30AM, Friday, January 29, 2016 at Arlington Park Cemetery, 6920 Lone Star Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32211 with Pastor James Jennings officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
