Obituary of Bobbie Prevatt

Bobbie Jean House Prevatt, 83, went to be with her Lord on November 30, 2015 after a courageous fight with cancer. Born April 28, 1932 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas she was the daughter of the late Cratie Smith and William H. House. She grew up in Pocahontas, Tennessee and after graduating high school, she moved to Memphis, Tennessee where she met her husband, Haskell Lamar Prevatt, Jr., USAF, at the YMCA Servicemen's Club where she was a junior hostess. They were married in 1950.

They moved to Gainesville, Florida to complete his education at the University of Florida and settled in Jacksonville, Florida in February 1956. At that time she took a legal secretary job with Robert L. Rowe, Jr., Attorney at Law whose firm continues to operate today.

They joined the Arlington United Methodist Church in 1960. Bobbie attended Jacksonville University earning a BA in Education and a MAT in Reading. She then worked as a teacher at Justina Elementary, Merrill Road Elementary and Jacksonville Beach Sixth Grade Center until she retired.

After retirement she began her world travels visiting all 7 continents and 49 States (she never reached North Dakota). She also loved cruising anywhere, at any time, with anyone.

Bobbie was a participant in the founding of the Permanent Endowment Fund for Arlington United Methodist Church and served as co-chair for the first 10 years. She also served on the Board of Trustees and the Leadership Council. She put her heart into starting the United Methodist Women's Silent Auction and organized it annually to provide money for mission work.

Bobbie's passion was teaching/playing bridge, as well as mah-jongg. She was active in Theater Jacksonville as a lifetime subscriber, Jacksonville University Performing Arts, the Fortuna Senior Center, Arlington Senior Classic Line Dancers, and the Cummer Museum.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Haskell Lamar Prevatt, Jr., daughter, Jane Prevatt Turney (John), and son, Michael Lamar Prevatt (Amy). Granddaughters, Laura and Rachel Prevatt, step-grandchildren J.R. and Anthony Turney, step-great grandchildren, Joshua, Jackson, Candace, and Jillian Turney, along with many nieces and nephews. Bobbie was predeceased by her sisters, Betty Ijames and Cecil Ann Dukes, and brothers, Bill House and William A. Fortune.

We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Jason Starr of North Florida Cancer Specialist for the dedication, love and spiritual support shown to Bobbie after her diagnosis in August 2014. Also to her longtime friend, Peggy Nussman, for escorting her to all her leisure activities during this difficult time.

The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Permanent Endowment Fund at Arlington United Methodist Church.

Viewing Services will be held on Sunday, December 6, 2015 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Arlington Cemetery Funeral Home on Lone Star Road, Jacksonville, Florida.

The funeral will be held Monday, December 7, 2015 at 11:00 AM, Arlington United Methodist Church, Jacksonville, Florida. Burial will follow at Arlington Cemetery, Jacksonville, Florida.
