Obituary of Carroll Laney

Carroll Lee Laney, 76, of Jacksonville, passed away at his home Monday, October 8, 2007. He was born October 24, 1930, in Granite Falls, NC. He is remembered as a loving husband, devoted father, caring brother and beloved uncle.

Carroll was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Lee and Linda Oxford Laney, and a brother, Dale Alexander Laney.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jeanette Hart Laney, and son Eric Lee Laney of Jacksonville. Other survivors are sister, Janice Laney Potts (husband, Curtis) of Jacksonville; nieces Cheryl Lynn Potts and Stacey Melinda Potts Shelton (husband, Leon), and grandniece, Gracie Shelton, of Jacksonville; nephew, Terry Dale Laney (wife, Shirley); and grandnephew, Michael Laney, of Winston Salem, NC.

Carroll was a faithful member of Parkwood Baptist Church. He directed the Adult 1 Sunday School Department, and as an usher, enjoyed greeting and interacting with members and visitors as they arrived for Sunday morning services. He served as former church clerk and was a dedicated member of various church committees for several years.

Carroll served his country in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was an avid reader and a student of history, with special interest in the time and events of World War II.

Carroll received his degree in Business Administration from Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, NC. He began a career with Internal Revenue Service in Jacksonville in 1957 as a Collection Officer, and received promotions in management throughout the following years. He also served in Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, and returned to Jacksonville as Field Branch Chief. He retired as Disclosure Officer in 1985. Additionally, he had numerous IRS teaching assignments, served on several national office task forces in Washington DC and elsewhere, and received several awards.

The family invites friends to Arlington Park Funeral Home, 6920 Lone Star Road, for visitation Thursday, October 11, 2007, from 6:00-8:00 p.m., and to the funeral service at Parkwood Baptist Church, 7900 Lone Star Road, at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 12, 2007. Interment in Arlington Park Cemetery will follow the service.
