Donald C. Gigax 66, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at his home in Jacksonville, Florida with his wife and mother at his side. He was the beloved husband of Margarita (Maggie) Gigax, with whom he shared 45 years of marriage, and the father of John, Alice and Gene Gigax. Donald loved his son-in-law, Shawn Hultquist, and his daughter-in-law, Jennifer Gigax, like his own children. Donald was born in Imperial, Nebraska on May 24, 1950, to Boyd G. and Barbara M. Gigax. He was raised and educated in Arlington, Texas. After joining the U.S. Navy in 1969, Donald served most of his career aboard Navy vessels. He was proud of his service and wore the uniform with pride. Donald earned numerous medals, including the Navy Achievement Medal (2), Combat Action Ribbon (2), Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Unit Commendation, Battel "E" Ribbon (2), Navy Good Conduct Medal (6), Navy Expeditionary Medal (2), National Defense Service Medal (2), the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (2), Southeast Asia Medal (3), Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (5), Vietnam Campaign Medal, Surface Warfare Specialist and Rifle Expert Medal. After 24 years of Naval Service, he retired. His joy turned to spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Donald also enjoyed the outdoors and spent much of his time hunting on the family farm in Nebraska. In addition, he was an active member of Northeast Florida Chapter for Concerns Of Police Survivors (COPS). With his loving wife, he leaves his mother Barbara of Hayes Center, Nebraska, daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Shawn Hultquist and their children, Garrett, Caitlin, and Wyatt of Saint Johns, Florida, his son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Jennifer Gigax and their children, Emily and Ryan of Neptune Beach, Florida. He also leaves a brother Boyd Blake Gigax and sister-in-law Mary of Hayes Center, Nebraska, and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his Father Boyd and his son John Gigax. A visitation is scheduled 6-8PM, Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at the funeral home with the Beaches Honor Guard standing guard. His Funeral Service will be held 11AM, Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at Arlington Park Funeral Home Chapel, 6920 lone Star Rd. Jacksonville, FL 32211. Interment will immediately follow at Arlington Park Cemetery, with the United States Navy rendering full Military Honors in recognition of his 24 years of service to a grateful Nation.
