Obituary of Doris Porter

Doris Miriam Horton Porter, age 87, died peacefully on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at Baptist South Hospital.

Doris was born October 13, 1927, in Flat Rock, North Carolina. She retired in 1989 from Goodyear Tire Company as a Certified Professional Secretary.

Doris loved to sew. She could make anything, from her daughter's wedding dress, to handbags and coats. Her sewing talents were renowned among those who knew her. She also knitted, painted, did needlepoint, made quilts, played the piano and the dulcimer. She also sang in the church choir. Mrs. Porter is predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Robert Phillip Porter; both parents, father, Douglas Harper Horton, mother, Mavola Laughter Horton and brother, C. Alan Horton.

She is survived by son, Douglas Smith (Robbie); daughter, Rebekah Smith Scott; granddaughter, Catherine Scott; Fred Scott (Cathy's father), stepson, Bob "Hullieo" Porter; stepdaughter, Judy Smith; niece, Tracy Boesig and nephew, Mark Horton.

The Porter family will receive friends for a Visitation Gathering 6-8 PM, Monday, July 13th, 2015 at the funeral home. A Celebration of life will be held in the chapel of the funeral home 11AM, Tuesday, July 14, 2015 with Rev. Ricky Powell officiating.An interment will immediately follow at Arlington Park Cemetery, 6921 Lone Star Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32211. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in her name be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
