Obituary of Elizabeth Shepherd
Elizabeth Singletary Shepherd, 97 years of age, went to be with her Lord Jesus on Sunday, October 23, 2011. She was born March 31, 1914 in Jacksonville, Florida to the late Luther Burr and Mary Olivia Singletary. Elizabeth grew up on the St. John's River in the days when it was fragrant with hyacinths. As a child she loved to walk to the riverbank to find soft-shelled crabs for her mama to cook. Elizabeth, like her father, was known for her good humor and wit. She loved to keep the little ones spellbound with her ghost stories. Elizabeth learned the importance of memorization "to keep your mind alert." Her favorite things to memorize were poetry and scripture. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Hilliard, FL. Elizabeth was a loving and dedicated wife for 65 years to Edward Hewett Shepherd who preceded her in death. Daughter Bobbie Turner and son James Shepherd also preceded her in death. Elizabeth leaves behind her beloved children Joanne Thomas, Joan Wade, Gail (Lee) Varnadore, Eddie (Joyce) Shepherd, Norma (Ed) Everett, (Sarah Shepherd); and many precious grandchildren. Family will receive friends at Arlington Park Funeral Home, 6920 Lone Star Road, for a visitation on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 from 10:00am to 12:00pm and a funeral service to follow at 12:00pm on Wednesday, October 26, 2011. Interment will follow at Arlington Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.
