IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ethel St
John
June 24, 1943 – September 7, 2025
Ethel St. John, 82, passed away peacefully on the morning of September 7, 2025 in Jacksonville, Florida. Born in New York City on June 24, 1943, Ethel was the beloved youngest daughter of the late Harry St. John, Sr. (1911-2005) and Lillian Elizabeth St. John (1916-1998).
From an early age, Ethel's talent and love for the arts shone brightly. She was accepted to the prestigious Music & Art High School in Manhattan, where she became an avid violinist & pianist in the school's orchestra and, subsequently, continued as a lifelong patron of the arts.
Ethel started a career in banking in New York City in the later 1960's and, after moving to Willingboro, New Jersey in 1970, continued to build a distinguished banking career. She began in the International Banking Division of First National Bank, and in 1980, joined Tri-County Savings and Loan Association. Through dedication and keen leadership, Ethel rose to Assistant Vice President, managing two branches and helping the institution grow its assets from $33 million to $100 million by 1985.
In 1999, Ethel moved to Jacksonville, Florida to care for her father, after the passing of her mother. During the day, she was caretaker and at night, she worked as manager of the evening call center at Wallace & Associates, while her nephew watched over her father. When her father's health started to fail, Ethel became his full-time caretaker. Once Ethel's duties as a caretaker were fulfilled, she went to school for tax preparation, which was her next and last career. After completing tax preparation studies, Ethel began managing Fresh Start Tax Service with her decades long friend Violet Walton.
Though Ethel was married, divorced, never remarried, and did not have children of her own, Ethel's love of family and friends was boundless. She was an excellent cook and baker. And as an animal lover and former longtime dog owner, Ethel developed skills equal to that of a dog whisperer. She was the youngest of five siblings – sisters Sarah P. St. John and Harriet M. Anfield (both predeceased), and is survived by brothers Harry St. John, Jr. (Bettye), and John St. John. Ethel is also survived by a multitude of nieces, nephews, including her caregivers Franz C. Wallace, Ill and his wife Terri Wallace, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nephews and great-great nieces, all of whom she appreciated, and in turn, was cherished for her steady presence and loving spirit. Ethel also leaves behind her cherished extended family, which includes dear friends Lavohn Wallace and Violet Walton.
