IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Eugenia (Genie)
Parker
July 21, 1933 – October 22, 2019
Eugenia "Genie" Ruth Ogden Parker, 86, passed away on October 22, 2019. Genie was born on July 21, 1933 in Tampa, FL to the late Harold and Ruth Ogden.
Genie, nicknamed "Oogie" by her closest friends, grew up in Winter Haven, FL and graduated from Winter Haven High School in 1951. During her teenage years, Genie enjoyed going on outings with her parents and attending dances with high school friends. She was also showcased at Cypress Gardens as one of their lovely "Southern Belles," young women dressed in crinolines and carrying parasols as they strolled through the gorgeous botanical gardens the attraction was known for. Genie graduated from Florida State University (FSU) in 1955 with a degree in elementary education, which she used for a brief stint in teaching after graduating. While attending FSU, Genie was a member of the Chi Omega sorority and, most importantly, met her future husband, Woody, on a blind date. Woody won Genie's heart by serenading her with his musical talents.
Genie married Elwood "Woody" Parker on December 8, 1956. They settled in Jacksonville, FL where they lovingly raised two daughters. They were members of both the Lakewood United Methodist Church and the Arlington United Methodist Church where they both served as Stephen Ministers.
Over the years, Genie was employed by several insurance companies; however, her greatest accomplishment and passion in life was that of being a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. Genie faithfully supported Woody in his work endeavors and multiple hobbies, while equally supporting her daughters in their schoolwork and extra-curricular activities, always there to help with homework and fundraising and to be their biggest fan at theatre, chorus, and band concerts. On top of all that, she had wonderful home cooked meals ready and waiting every night for her family, taught herself to sew so that she could make matching outfits for her daughters, and even had time to play games like Tiddledy Winks and Double Solitaire with her girls in the evening.
In retirement, she and Woody enjoyed life's simple pleasures, such as walking up and down the Regency Square Mall, having coffee at Starbucks and Panera, participating in a neighborhood book club, and spending time with their grandson, Douglas. She and her daughters loved dining at Ruby Tuesday's, shopping at the Dollar Tree, where they rarely spent just a dollar, and pub crawling at the local breweries. Genie, at Woody's encouragement, was also a licensed HAM Radio Operator and enjoyed attending Ham Fests in Shelby, NC with fellow hams.
Genie was preceded in death by her husband, Woody, and her parents, Harold and Ruth. She lives on in the hearts of her daughters, Ruthie Brown (Doug), Rachel Myers Weissman (Alan); and grandson, Douglas Brown.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am, Friday October 25th at the Arlington Park Funeral Home, 6920 Lone Star Rd, Jacksonville, Florida.
