Obituary of Flavis Barnard
Flavis Joe Barnard Sr., 84 years of age, passed away on Friday Dec.3rd 2010 at home surrounded by family. He was born July 19, 1926 in Cleveland Tenn. Eventually after joining the Navy he moved to Jacksonville , Florida where he lived for over 54 years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Wilma Jean Barnard, his children Pamela Jo (Tom Farmer), Patricia Keener, Flavis Joe Jr. (Dolores Osborn), and Melinda (Larry Hayes), brother Norman Barnard (Louise), sister Inez Bush, 9 Grandchildren, and 8 Great Grandchildren. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Arvel John and Edith Barnard, son A.L. Barnard (Buddy), and his brothers Jack and Edgar Barnard.
CPO Joe Barnard joined the United States Navy at age 17 and served proudly for over 20 years of active service before retiring in 1963. He served during World War II in the Asian Pacific Theater and during the Korean War. His career included serving aboard the USS Shangri-la, USS Intrepid , USS Sarsfield, USS Lexington and as Exchange Manager at both NAS Cecil Field and Mayport.
After his retirement from the Navy, he continued his affiliation with the military working in sales to the military exchanges for over 48 years. First, as owner of his own company Serv-ex Sales Corp. and then as an employee of Mercury Luggage up until September. of this year.
Joe was affectionately known as "Neighbor" by his friends, never meeting a stranger, always having a cup of coffee in his hand and a story or joke on his lips.
Funeral Services will be held at 1pm, Wed., Dec. 8th at Arlington Park Funeral Home, 6920 Lone Star Road , Jacksonville , FL. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tues Dec. 7th from 6 to 8 pm.
