Obituary

Gwendolyn Evon Penwitt Boston, 97, passed away August 18, 2021 after a brief illness in Jacksonville, FL. Gwendolyn was born on February 23, 1924 in Chicago Heights, IL. She was the first to graduate from Bloom County High School in Chicago Heights, and was Rosie the Riveter during World War II. She followed her family to Jacksonville, FL on October 1966 and worked for Independent Life and Jacksonville Blood Bank. Gwendolyn raised a family that she was so proud of, and in addition she helped to raise her grandchildren who loved her immensely. She had an adventurous streak and always faced challenges with a quiet grace, and never complained. There wasn't anything she couldn't do. Most of all she loved her family, selflessly taking care of her little brother (who she always referred to as "her little boy") and taking care of her grand children and great grandchildren. Her gift was being a nurturer. Selfless and devoted to her family, she recognized where she was needed.
Gwendolyn is survived by her daughter, Laurel Gray; her daughter-in-law, Judy Gray; 8 grand-children; 17 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Gwendolyn is predeceased by her parents, Alvin and Lenna Penwitt; her brother, Evron Penwitt; sister, Betty Brooke; children, Marsha Gray, Dennis Gray, Bradford Gray and Roxane Read; grandchild, Amber Davis; and husband, Adkins "Eddie" Boston.
To honor her memory please donate to the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Arlington Park Funeral Home.
