Obituary of Helen Robertson

Mary Helen Rogers Robertson died Sunday, December 26, 2010 in Austell, Georgia where she has been living for the past five years.

Helen was born August 19, 1921 in Atlanta, Georgia to Watson Fisher Rogers and Signal Florene Gentry Rogers. She spent summers on her grandparent's farm in Powder Springs, Georgia with her brothers and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Helen graduated from Commercial High School, Atlanta, Georgia in 1939. She was awarded a scholarship to university after high school, but because of family circumstances she went to work at the Rialto Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. She later worked for the Standard Oil Company in Atlanta, Georgia. In December 1941, she met Alfred Robertson at a USO dance and married him two months later on February 14, 1942. Helen remained in Atlanta while Al left to fight in the war. After Al returned from the war, they remained in Atlanta until 1954 when they moved to Jacksonville, Florida.

While in Jacksonville, Helen taught at The Chappell School from 1962 until 1971. She and Al were founding and charter members of Holiday Hill Baptist Church in Jacksonville. Al was transferred in 1971 and they lived in Conyers, Georgia for a year and then in Ellicott City, Maryland for ten years. After retirement in 1982 they returned to Jacksonville, Florida.

Helen was a multi-talented individual. Her passions included sewing and playing the piano and organ, and caring for her family. Helen is survived by her sons Larry (Cynthia), Don (Shirley), Steve (Mona), Gregg; 7 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Alfred W. Robertson, daughter Diane Robertson Scott, her brother Howard Lester Rogers and brother Watson Eugene Rogers.

Visitation will take place at Arlington Park Funeral Home on Thursday, December 30, 2010 from 7-8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, December 31, 2010 at 2 p.m. with Reverend Albert Byrd officiating. Interment will follow in Arlington Park Cemetery where Helen will be laid to rest beside her beloved Alfred.
