January 10, 1920 - February 29, 2016
Jane Allen De Roo Shama, 96, daughter of Walter Irwin De Roo and Ruth Harmon Vories, passed away at home in Myrtle Beach SC of natural causes on Monday, February 29 2016. She was born at her parents' home in Covington KY on January 10, 1920. Mrs. Shama was raised in the Hyde Park area of Cincinnati OH, graduating from Withrow High School in 1938 as the Art Editor of Withrow Annual. She was soon employed as a bookstore librarian, setting up and operating many rental libraries in various department stores across the Eastern U.S. On such an assignment in Anderson IN, she met her future husband, Rex Shama, in 1942. They married in 1944 before he departed with his Army Air Corps unit as a Troop Carrier Glider Pilot in England during World War II. She was a homemaker, an avid seamstress and painter, and enjoyed golf, haute couture fashion, and her growing family. She and Rex lived in West Lafayette IN, Lancaster PA, Hyattsville and Silver Spring MD where they raised their 2 children. They made Jacksonville their home in June, 1979, living in University Heights for 29 years. During that time, they travelled extensively in the U.S., to Quito Ecuador, El Salvador and England, and she was an active member of Arlington Park United Methodist Church in Arlington.
She was preceded in death by Rex, her husband of 54 years, and their son, Michael Shama.
In 2008, she moved to live near her daughter's family in Beavercreek OH. The family then relocated together to Myrtle Beach SC in January 2011, where she is survived by her daughter, Pat, her son-in-law, Gary Browning, and his mother Mildred Browning. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, De Lene Shama of Silver Spring MD, her five grandchildren, Philip Shama of Houston TX, Faith Shama Davis and husband Will of Beltsville MD, Jessica Darling and husband Loren of East Lansing MI, Christine Browning of NYC, and Gwendolyn Browning of Branson MO, in addition to five great-grandchildren, Dacree Shama, Elijah Davis, Ezra, Levi and Cora Darling.
A Family Memorial will take place at Arlington Park Cemetery in Jacksonville in the near future.
