Obituary of John Dyer
John L. Dyer, 92, loving father and grandfather of Jacksonville, Florida passed away Friday, April 16, 2010. Born on June 5th 1917 in Jefferson, NY. He is survived by his children, John L. (Leslie) Dyer II of Alpharetta, GA, Patricia (Bill) Coffing of Mandarin; Margaret (Marc) Rasor of Fleming Island; grandchildren, Jason and Mathew Coffing, Courtney and Caroline Dyer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Betty. John graduated from Springfield College in 1940 and later received his Masters degree from Syracuse University. In 1941, John enlisted into the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge in 1945 as a 1st Lieutenant. Following a successful career as an insurance agent in upstate NY, John moved to Jacksonville in 1969 where he retired as a professor at FJC in 1982. After retiring, John and Betty spent their time traveling the world and playing golf. John was a past president of the NE Florida Golf Association and long time member of Hidden Hills CC. He was actively involved in Highlands Presbyterian Church; teaching Sunday school and being a table parent for the Logos Program which he loved. John was a 60 year member of the Masons achieving the level of 32nd degree of the Scottish Rite. In addition, John was also a member of the York Rite, Morocco Shrine 76er's., and an active member of the American Legion. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to his doctors, caregivers at the Atrium, and his church family for their love and care over the years. A special thank you to Kris Bynum for the love, care, and compassion she provided to him over the last several months. A memorial service will be held Friday morning at 11 AM, April 23rd at Highlands United Presbyterian Church, 10900 McCormick Road. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM, Thursday, April 22nd at Arlington Park Funeral Home, 6920 Lone Star Road. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorials be made to Highlands United Presbyterian Church.
