John Roland Nicholas died peacefully surrounded by his family at his home in Jacksonville on Saturday, September 3, 2022. He was 85. Born on February 7, 1937, in Carbon Hill, Alabama, John was the son of Curtis and Pearl Nicholas. John grew up in Carbon Hill with his four brothers and three sisters, Terrell, Hugh, Raymond, Danny, Honey, Sandy, and Lil. He was a veteran and served in the United States Army. While working for the railroad in Chicago, John met his future wife, Marilyn (Bandringa). The couple married in 1959. At the urging of his brother Hugh, John moved to Jacksonville in 1963 to work with Hugh at Nick's Barbershop in Southside Estates. The brothers worked together until Hugh's death in 1995. John also worked at the Jacksonville Shipyard and shipyards at Mayport, Amelia and Blount Islands for many years. John was an avid fisherman. He also loved to read, especially Westerns and books on nature. He enjoyed dancing and, for many years was a member of the Florida Boppers and the Club Savoy. John was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn, his sons Jimmy (and his widow, Tammy), and Jay. He is survived by his daughter Lori and his sons John, Joey and his wife Karen, Peter and his wife Cheryl, his grandchildren Michael, Katelyn, and Lauren, and his brother Danny and his wife, Janet.
