Joseph Herman Caldwell, fondly known to many as "Joe," passed away peacefully under the care of Hospice on August 11, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on January 19, 1934, in Jacksonville, Florida, Joe's life was a testament to service, education, and unwavering kindness.

Joe was the beloved son of his biological parents, Herman and Florence Zapf, and was lovingly raised by his adoptive parents, Frank and Josephine Caldwell.

A proud graduate of Fletcher High School in 1952, Joe went on to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees from Florida State University and the University of Florida, ultimately achieving a doctorate from Nova University. His passion for learning was mirrored in his dedication to teaching and mentoring countless students.

Joe honorably served his country as a highly classified naval communications watch officer in the Pacific, where he served under three Admirals. His years in the Navy were filled with adventure and duty, leaving a lasting impact on his life and those he served alongside.

In 1959 after a heartfelt invitation from his former high school friend, Myra Brown, Joe embarked on a new journey in education. He began teaching 4th grade at Ponte Vedra Palm Valley School, eventually transitioning to teach science to middle school students. Joe's influence extended beyond the classroom as he coached boys' flag football, basketball, and softball teams, leading them to multiple county championships. Despite not having a sports background, Joe's dedication and strategic understanding of coaching were unparalleled. Joe, his close friend Myra Brown Cook, Lina Christianson authored and published three books including Come Alive Classroom and Chalkdust used in colleges and universities throughout the United States.

Joe was more than a teacher; he was a mentor and friend. He never missed a birthday, sending cards and money to his former students and their families. His generosity and ability to make every person feel valued left a lasting mark on all who knew him. Joe's legacy as a man of integrity, intelligence, and humility endures through the countless lives he touched.

A devout Catholic, Joe cherished the Latin Mass and shared a close friendship with Father Kelly of St. Paul’s Catholic Church. He was also a leader in the Boy Scouts and served as President of the Beaches Historical Society.

Joe's warmth, kindness, and dedication to service were the hallmarks of his extraordinary life. He leaves behind a community grateful for his profound influence and cherished memories.

In lieu of flowers, any in kind donations, in Joe’s name, be sent to Boy Scouts of America, North Florida Council, honoring his lifelong commitment to helping others.

Joe’s memorial service is scheduled for September 25th, 12 noon, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church at the beach.
