Obituary of Lamar Mayfield

Lamar Clifford Mayfield Jr., 80, of Jacksonville, FL passed away June 8, 2011 The son of the late Lamar C. Mayfield, Sr. and Eula Mills Mayfield was born on May 6, 1931, in Tampa, Fl. Cliff attended Andrew Jackson High School prior to proudly serving in the Air Force as a member of the Strategic Air Command 2d Bomb Wing- 49th Bomb Squadron. After returning home he graduated from Florida State University earning a degree in Economics. Upon completion of his studies he accepted a position with The Prudential Insurance Company and holding many assignments before retiring as an Executive after 36 years. After retirement he enjoyed an occasional round of golf but his biggest passion was following all things Seminole. He really loved his Seminoles attending most of the team's home football games for 25 years. Besides FSU football he also was a history buff and devoured every book he could find on World War II. Clifford was an active and enthusiastic volunteer who believed in giving back to his community. Having earned the rank of Eagle Scout, he was active in both the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts as his children were growing up. Later he served as a Lay Mediator for the Duval County Juvenile Courts and did volunteer work for the United Way. Clifford became active with the Strategic Air Command 2nd Bomb Wing Reunion Group and held the position of President for many years. In addition he was very active in his church. Clifford was a long time member of The First Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville, where he was an Ordained Elder. He was a founding member of the Hodges Blvd Presbyterian Church where he spent countless hours helping out. He also did work for the Presbytery of St. Augustine. Clifford felt that his biggest legacy was his children and grandchildren. He always tried to stay involved with them and was very proud of them all. Clifford will be fondly remembered by his loving wife of 55 Years, Isobel Balfour Mayfield; a sister, Dorothy M. Boyte, of Jacksonville, FL; four children: Jim Mayfield and his wife Susan of Mission Hills, KS, Dori McCormack and her husband, Doug of Hebron, CT, Ken Mayfield and his wife Diane of Jacksonville, FL, and Margaret Powers and her husband Steve of Orange Park, FL. In addition he leaves nine grandchildren Rachel Mayfield; Daniel and Emma McCormack; Mitchell, Andrew and Benjamin Mayfield; Kirby, Courtney and Phillip Powers. In lieu of flowers, family requests that memorials be made to Westminster Woods of Julington Creek Benevolence assistance fund, 25 State Road 13, Jacksonville, FL 32259 or Hodges Boulevard Presbyterian Church, 4140 Hodges Boulevard, Jacksonville FL, 32224. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 11:00am.
