Obituary of Leonard Wood

Leonard A. Wood, a retired Program Manager of the Naval Command Systems Support Activity, died on July 31, 2013 at the Stuart Meyer Hospice House in Palm Coast, Florida.

Mr. Wood was a Navy Veteran of World War II and the Korean War. While serving aboard the destroyer USS Stanly, he participated in most of the battles in the Pacific from the Solomon Islands to Iwo Jima, the Philippines and Okinawa, where his ship was heavily damaged by Japanese Suicide planes. He later served aboard the destroyer USS John Hood during the Korean Campaign. This was followed by overseas duty at the Fleet training Group at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. His active military service was then brought to a close after service with the Chief of Naval Operations in the Pentagon. His military affiliation was then continued by employment with the Naval Command Systems Support Activity where he served an additional fourteen years as a computer systems analyst and later as Program Manager, guiding the development of computer systems in the fields of intelligence and nuclear strike planning. His final retirement from 34 years of Navy service was effected in July 1976.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Springfield, Virginia and after relocating to Palm Coast, Florida in the past year, he became a member of First Baptist Church of Palm Coast, Florida.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Nona Marie Wood of Palm Coast, Florida; two sons, Leonard A. Wood III of Palm Coast, Florida and Floyd S. Wood of Woodbridge, Virginia; daughter, Lisa C. Matthews of Springfield, Virginia; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

A graveside inurnment will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at 2:30pm at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road in Jacksonville, Florida. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Alzheimer's Association, 4237 Salisbury Road, Suite 310, Jacksonville, FL 32216.
