Obituary of Lois Salyer

Lois Ann Salyer, of Jacksonville, passed away on Good Friday, March 29, 2013. She was 83 years old. She was born on November 17, 1929 in Rockhouse, Kentucky, in Pike County, where she grew up. After graduating from high school in 1947, she attended Pikeville College in Kentucky. In May 1950, she married the late Charles Randolph Salyer, in Praise, Kentucky. They moved to Florida in the 1950s where Charles worked various railroad jobs. They lived in Miami, Fort Pierce, and finally settled in Jacksonville. Lois worked for the US Selective Service in Fort Pierce, and in Jacksonville she worked for State Farm Insurance until her daughter was born in 1959. In 1965, the family moved to the Panama Canal Zone in Central America where they lived until 1979. In the Canal Zone, Lois worked as the office manager for the Panama Canal Yacht Club in the port of Cristobal, a job she loved and spoke fondly of for many years. After leaving the Canal Zone in 1979 and moving back to Jacksonville, Lois worked for Quasar Electronics, Ramada Inn, and last at a small shoe boutique, Lester Shoes, where she worked for many years until the store was closed. Lois was a talented seamstress and enjoyed sewing for many years. She was a member of the Holiday Hill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her late husband Charles Salyer, who passed away in January 2012. She is survived by her one child, Terri Anne Lang, and her husband Jeff, of Colorado Springs, Colorado. A visitation will be held at Arlington Park Funeral Home, 6920 Lone Star Road, Jacksonville, FL from 1-2:00pm, with her funeral to commence at 2:00pm, with Pastor Albert Byrd officiating. Burial will follow immediately in Arlington Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Holiday Hill Baptist Church.
