Obituary

Mary Jane Nolan Harris, 99, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away peacefully on Wednesday June 5, 2019. Mary Jane was born in Caney, Kansas, the daughter of Manuel and Cora (McFarland) Nolan. One of five children, she grew up on a farm near Coffeyville, Kansas where she attended school and worked to help support her family. Later, she moved to Chicago, Illinois where she worked as a bookkeeper. There she met and married the love of her life, Isaac "Ike" Harris.

Ike and Mary Jane were active members of the Congregational Church of Park Manor in Chicago. Mary Jane was still in contact friends from that church. When Ike transferred to Jacksonville in 1975 to work for the Afro-American Life Insurance Company, they joined Arlington Congregational Church. Using her past administrative talents from working at Ovine Laboratories in Chicago, she worked as financial secretary for Arlington Congregational Church until December 2018. Until recently Mary Jane enjoyed good health. She was active in church circles and participated
in social activities at church and at her residence, Hurley Manor. She enjoyed writing poems and prayers. She had a deep personal faith. Mary Jane was a devoted friend who was lively, outgoing, and very independent. She was always eager to join friends for lunch. Mary Jane was
happy to share her words of wisdom from her years of experience when she deemed it appropriate. She treated everyone with respect, kindness, and love.

Mary Jane was preceded in death by her husband Ike, her parents Manuel and Cora, her brothers Vance and Nathan, as well as her sisters Elizabeth and Cora. She is survived by her nephew Paul (Charlotte) Wilson and her niece Charlene Nolan. Mary Jane will be deeply missed by those who knew her.
