IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Norman
Stegall
September 16, 1932 – November 22, 2019
Norman Stegall age 87 passed away peacefully Friday, November 22 after a lengthy illness.
He was born September 16, 1932 in Richmond, Indiana to Basil and Ruth Stegall. His family moved to South Bend, Indiana where he spent his childhood. He graduated from James Whitcomb Riley High School.
Norman worked as a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer. He spent over 40 years traveling as a contract job shopper. He was well respected in his field. Some of his jobs included designing the crew sleep quarters on the space station for NASA at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX. He worked at Phillip Morris in Richmond, VA designing a machine that reclaimed tobacco from reject cigarettes at 1,000 cigarettes per minute. His last job, before retiring, was a design and build contract to make casual contact lenses for Bausch & Lomb at the IBM facility in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Norman pushed himself to excel in everything he did. He was a competitive roller skater, and competitive diver in his early years. He raced boats with his Dad and motorcycles on the street. In later years he was an excellent skier and decided to give that up for golf which became his passion. He enjoyed teaching his friends how to better their scores.
He was active in summer stock theatre playing parts in Carousel and Oliver. He retired in 1994 and became involved in the acting/modeling scene in Jacksonville. He was in numerous commercials as an extra (Subway, Larry's Giant Subs, IRS Training video to name a few) and had a speaking part in the TV show Point Man starring Jack Scalia in 1994-1995.
Noman married the love of his life, Sandy in 1992. They were together for a total of 30 years. He was outgoing, a true joke teller, compassionate and a good friend. He collected cookbooks, clocks and golf shirts. He will be missed by all that knew him.
Norman was a dog and cat lover. His current dog, Trouble will miss her 40 minute belly rubs. All the dogs that went before him, Peanut, Angel, Buttons and Cubby will be waiting for him with wagging tails and licks.
He is survived by his beloved wife Sandy, brother-in-law, Jim Godshalk (Mary Joe), nieces Linda Cowell and Diana Bailey (David), nephew Larry Kapelski (Margaret), and all his golf buddies over the years especially Billy, Brendan, Herb, Don and Al.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Denise Stegall, his twin sister Norma Godshalk and his older sister Lois Kapelski.
Norman's family wants to thank all the nurses at Community Hospice especially Caron Martin who went out of her way to make him comfortable.
