Obituary of Raymond Hanley

Raymond Francis Hanley, age 89, son of Russel and Sidonia Shaner Hanley, born, February 10, 1926 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, passed away May 30, 2015 at the Earl Hadlow Community Hospice Center in Jacksonville, Florida.

He was a proud Veteran of the United States Navy and served on a ship in the South Pacific Ocean during World War II. When he returned home from the war he graduated from the University of Pittsburg with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation Raymond landed his first job with Westinghouse and married Ercel Dean Thomas in 1951. Together they lived in Dallas Texas, Arlington Virginia, and finally settled in Jacksonville, Florida.

It was in Jacksonville that Raymond opened, with his brother Bud Hanley, an engineering firm called Circuit Engineering. He owned this business from 1959 until 1995 when he retired. Raymond's passion for engineering, hydraulics and pneumatics did not end at retirement; he focused his energy on helping The Fluid Power Society grow. His passion and dedication to the fluid power industry is legendary."

Raymond F. Hanley, CFPE/AI Emeritus, served as IFPS president from 1986-1987. Mr. Hanley also served as certification vice president and had been an IFPS honorary director since 2006. Mr. Hanley's continuing contributions to the IFPS certification program led to his being named the first and (so far) only IFPS emeritus certificate holder. Mr. Hanley authored two books, Math for Certification and Fluid Power Essential Best Practices.

The IFPS established a "Raymond Hanley Scholarship". The scholarship will be awarded to a high-caliber student pursuing his/her post-secondary education in fluid power and will be administered by the Fluid Power Educational Foundation (FPEF).

Raymond was a founding member of Resurrection Catholic Church in Arlington, as of 1998 a member of San Juan Del Rio Catholic Church in Fruit Cove.

Raymond enjoyed dancing, camping, fishing, and most of all eating seafood! He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, neighbor and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Raymond was preceded in death by his wife Ercel Hanley, sister Virginia Mattern, and his 2 brothers William "Bill" Hanley and Arnold "Bud" Hanley.

He is survived by his 8 children and their families;
