IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert Lee
Beverley
December 7, 1937 – July 10, 2020
Robert Lee Beverley 82, of Jacksonville, Florida passed into the arms of Jesus on Friday evening,
July 10, 2020 after a lengthy illness. Mr. Beverley was born in Pierce County, Blackshear,
Georgia to the late William Levy Beverley and Eula Blanche Greene Beverley.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, William "Buddy", Levell,
Edward and Eugene Beverley and four sisters, Mary Corbitt, Hazel Gill, Mattie Hopkins and
Jeanette Mathis.
Mr. Beverley is survived by his wife of 62 years, the former Shirley Jacobs of Jacksonville, FL.
Mr. Beverley was a Christian by Faith in accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior. He was a
devoted and loving husband and father, along with his wife, raising two daughters Lynn
Beverley Owens (Amos) and Brenda Beverley Landon. He is also survived by four grandchildren,
Howard Lee Landon (Jessica) of Portland, Oregon, (Lee, of whom he was instrumental in
raising,) Robert Jason Melvin (Jessica) of Plant City, FL, Brandy Michelle Allen (Derek) of Orange
Park, FL, (Brandy, of whom he was instrumental in raising,) Daniel Aaron Melvin of Tampa, FL
and a sister Minnie Lanelle Sapp of Blackshear, GA.
He leaves behind eight great grandchildren, Amaya Lorraine Wedington, Levi Henry Melvin,
Talea Michelle Wedington, Derek Anthony Allen Jr., Joshua Asher Melvin, Samuel Augustine
Melvin, Juliana Sarai Melvin and Ezra Kaius Melvin and numerous nieces and nephews in the
Florida and Georgia area that he loved like his own children.
After marrying, he made his home in Jacksonville. He retired from Ryder Truck Rental after 34
years of continuous dedication in the Service Department. He specialized in capacities such as
Lot Porter and Emergency Roadside Assistance for the Ryder Fleet covering all of North Florida.
Growing up in the Waycross and Blackshear Georgia area, Robert was one of ten children. He
finished the eighth grade in middle school and along with two of his older brothers, quit school
to go to work and help support their large family. He accepted his first job at the shoe factory in
Waycross and worked there for several years. He, along with his brothers "Buddy" and Edward,
taught themselves how to play the guitar. Edward also played the fiddle. Together Robert and
Edward played music in the town halls where square dancing was very popular. This is where he
met his wife Shirley.
Musically speaking, Robert and Edward played backup music to Country Music Artist Faron
Young in the later 1950's at a Waycross, GA radio station. After moving to Jacksonville and
accepting the job with Ryder, Robert formed his own band with some other musicians of whom
also worked for Ryder and also as back up at the Jacksonville Coliseum for Country music artists
Gene Watson and also Del Reeves. Today, along with his daughter Lynn, his grandson Rob
Melvin and great-grandson Levi Melvin have inherited his musical talent.
In healthier days, Mr. Beverley loved to fish whenever he got the chance both in Florida and
Georgia with his nephews and grandsons. Special memories were also made camping with his
wife and daughters and friends down at Kingsley Lake. He enjoyed cooking outdoors on his grill
and going to Georgia often, to visit his family there. Visits to Georgia were mostly to his
mother's or one of his older sister's homes to have all the family musicians meet and play
Country, Gospel and Bluegrass music for hours on end. The day was always enjoyed as well
with the biggest "dinner on the grounds" type of meals with all homemade dishes and desserts.
Although he was a quiet man, when he had a point to make, he made it. He would always
quote his mother "Always remember, what's right is right, and what's wrong is wrong."
He was loved by all, and is already greatly missed.
Pallbearers: Lee Landon, Amos Owens, Robert Melvin, Daniel Melvin, Derek Allen, Matthew
Abshire and Levi Melvin.
