He was educated in the Whitmire Public School System and was very active in high school. He played on the football team, played trumpet in the Whitmire band, and was the number one chair in his section. He was selected as the most talented in the senior superlatives for the senior yearbook.
After graduating from high school, he attended the citadel in Charleston, SC, where he played in the band. The band paraded on Friday afternoon around the square as they shared their music with spectators. He served in the U.S. Army for 2 years.

He retired in 1992 and was very active in his retirement. He wanted to help people, so he drove for meals on wheels. For 33 years, he was a dedicated treasurer at Arlington Presbyterian Church. Every Monday, he would be at the church writing checks or paying bills. Even during vacations, surgeries, or recoveries, he was concerned about his job at the church. He also served as an elder and a deacon at Arlington Presbyterian church.
Roger loved to square dance and they both traveled to national conventions. He was also a super swimmer and diver and loved to hunt deer and doves in SC, and ducks in Louisiana.
Feeding the birds was what he enjoyed the most. His feathered friends ate from a scrumptious diet. Another joy Roger had was camping for 50 years. He loved to camp in the mountains of NC, especially during fall leaf time. He loved to travel and took trips to different states and also to Europe.
Roger deeply loved his family. He will be sorely missed.
