Obituary of Roy Massie

Roy Massie was born in Roanoke, VA on July 22, 1923. As a young man he excelled in baseball and continued his love of baseball throughout his life. He was a Marine in WWII and served four years in the Pacific. He was a dedicated soldier and loved serving his country. In spite of the cruelty and sadness of the war he embraced the experience and always remarked about the beauty of the places and the people they encountered on those remote islands. Upon his return from the war he married his sweetheart Crystal Carter. They resided in Roanoke close to family and friends. Economic downturns of the community brought them to Jacksonville, FL in 1959. He was employed for 26 years with the City of Jacksonville in engineering support service. His later years were spent in Central Florida where he moved to be close to family after the passing of his beloved wife, Crystal. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Maitland. Throughout his life he was an avid golfer winning many golf tournaments. He once remarked that he had no desire to win the lottery or to even play, after all what more could a man ask for than what he had. He is survived by his son, John W. Massie & wife, Glenda, Maitland, grandson, Jeffrey H. Massie and his wife Brandi, Sarasota. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Melvin, Vaiden and Orville Massie.
