Sam W. Costello age 74, passed away peacefully at St. Vincent's Medical Center Southside surrounded by his loving family on December 28, 2017. He was born in Boise, Idaho on July 14, 1943 to Salvador and Zora Costello. He retired as Master Chief in the Navy after 23 years of honorable service. He served on the USS Swordfish, the USS Walker, the USS Midway, Recruit Training Command as Company Commander and Career Counselor in Orlando, FL, and finished his naval career in Mayport, FL. After retiring from the Navy, he worked at several nuclear power plants in New York, North Carolina and Georgia. He also worked for the City of Jacksonville and at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station as a Mechanical Engineering Technician where he retired a second time.
Sam loved to travel in his fifth wheel, enjoyed going on pleasure cruises, working in the church memorial garden and being with his family and grandchildren. He belonged to the Men's Garden Club of Jacksonville, and he also did work for the Garden Club of Jacksonville. He was a member of the Arlington Lion's Club, Moroccan Shrine and William B. Barnett Masonic Lodge #187.
Sam was preceded in death by his brothers James and George Midwood and his sister Mary Gutierrez.
He is survived by his wife, Carol of 52 years; his son Sam Costello (Maria); his daughter Michelle Hardman (Gary); his granddaughters Madison and Cassidy Shaw, his grandson Nicholas Hardman, and his beloved pet, Jack. He will be greatly missed.
The family will receive guests for a Visitation at 10 AM, Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 8264 Lone Star Road, Jacksonville, Florida, followed by a service to celebrate his life at 11:00 AM. Sam will be laid to rest with full military honors at Jacksonville National Cemetery at 2:30 PM on January 2, 2018.
