Obituary of Samuel Day

DAY A memorial service in honor of Samuel Larkin Day, Jr., 90, will be held at Southside Baptist Church on Monday, September 17, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. Samuel was born August 2, 1917, in Fitzgerald, Georgia; he died at Memorial Hospital on September 13. A graduate of Deland High School in 1935, Samuel married Dorothy Ashton, of New Smyrna Beach, in 1941. He served as a Chief Boatswain's Mate in the United States Navy Beach Battalion during WWII; after being stationed in Key West, then North Africa, he participated in the invasions of Normandy, Sicily and Salerno. Sam and Dot lived in New Smyrna Beach from 1946-1956 and were active members of the First Baptist Church where he was a deacon. They moved to Jacksonville in 1956 and joined Southside Baptist Church. Sam worked in educational media sales, consulting with schools throughout Florida. He is survived by his daughter, Dolores Day Douglas; his son, Stephen Ashton Day; three granddaughters, Holly Day FitzHarris, Nicole Douglas Gossett, Diana Douglas McAllister; and two great-granddaughters, Taylor Avery Gossett and Aubrey Skye FitzHarris. Mr. Day was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Day, and his two brothers Linton Joseph Day of Atlanta, Georgia, and John Talley Day of Deland, Florida.
