Sherlie L.
Porter
Jan 15, 1937 — Mar 21, 2018
Sherlie L. Porter, loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, died March 21, 2018 in Jacksonville, Florida with her family at her side. She was 81. Sherlie was born January 15, 1937 in Bartow to Margie C. and Harold N. "Bodie" Bodenham, inheriting Margie's kind heart and friendliness and Bodie's sharp wit and willingness to tell you what she thought. After marrying Danel W. "Dan" Porter, the love of her life, she moved with him to Japan, Louisiana, and then back to Florida, all courtesy of the US Air Force. Despite their early moves, Sherlie lived most of her life in Lake Placid, where she was a member of First Baptist Church. A hard worker and a fiercely involved mom, Sherlie rose to the rank of Branch Manager and Vice President of Huntington Bank while being a dedicated "baseball mom" from little league through high school. She had an whistle that could be heard for half a mile (indicating to her children that it was time to come home), and she was fondly known for her tendency to mispronounce certain words. "WalMarts" was one of her favorite places to "turn tags," despite Dan's constant assertion that she "didn't need that." We're glad that she will not need "Pellillicin" or "Tydenol" anymore, and that all of her "mammeograms" turned out fine. She never met a stranger, and was quick to make new friends. She had a deep, infectious laugh and a beautiful smile. She loved camping in the Everglades, music, fancy cars, romance novels, good southern cookin' and most of all, her family, who were required to notify her of their safe arrival home after any significant travel. We have not yet received her call, but we know she has made it home. She will be deeply missed by her husband of 60 years, Dan, her daughter, Lee Autrey (Dennis), her son, James "J.B." Porter (Lisa), her grandchildren Jason Brady (Nelly), Jered Brady (Amber), Matt Autrey, Kaley Porter, and Daniel Porter, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. Her parents and an infant brother predeceased her.
A private family service will be scheduled on a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Heart Association or to your favorite charity.
