JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA – Sylvia Inez Deakin, 88, died June 24, 2020, at Community
Hospice, Jacksonville, FL. She was born on January 20, 1932, in Falmouth, Maine, the daughter
of Willis and Eleanor Bucknam Hanson.
Sylvia graduated from Falmouth High School in 1950. After graduation, she moved to
Spartanburg S.C. where she raised her family and went on to work as a reporter for over twenty
years at the Spartanburg Herald-Journal newspaper.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her sisters, Ann Tibbals, Priscilla Madsen, and
Faith Rideout, and her son, John Frederick Deakin. Surviving are her daughter, JoAnn Deakin
Carpenter (Bruce) of Jacksonville, Florida and her son, William Donald Deakin of Florence, S.C.
Also surviving are three grandchildren, Charlotte Deakin Hale (Mark) of Goldsboro, N.C., John
Frederick Deakin, Jr. (Marissa) of Sumter, S.C., and Michael Hanson Carpenter (Rachel) of
Jacksonville, FL. Sylvia also had four great grandchildren and a great granddaughter due in
September.
Those who wish to remember Sylvia may make gifts in her memory to the Alzheimer's
Association.
