Obituary

Thomas (Tom/Tommy) Crumpton passed away January 12, 2020 after a courageous, hard-fought battle with cancer. Tom was 73 years of age.

Tom was born in Bessemer Alabama in 1946. His family relocated to Jacksonville FL when he was 6 years old. He graduated from Robert E Lee High School in 1965 and immediately enlisted in the U S Air Force. He was very proud of his time served in the Air Force as a Morse Systems Operator (ditty bopper) where he made several life-long friends. During his service of our country for 8 years, he was stationed in Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, and state side in San Antonio TX. After an Honorable Discharge, Tom worked with the U S Postal Service for 33 years. He retired in 2006 and enjoyed his retirement years traveling, reading, and watching old westerns and football on TV. My how he loved those old western movies and TV shows! As a kid, Tom enjoyed comic books, especially Mad Magazine. This is likely where he got his dry humor and sense of sarcasm we all loved so much, adding words to our vocabulary such as grey poison spit spider and Potrzebie. He also had a great love of music which he instilled in his children. He was loved so much by all and will be greatly missed.

He was a huge Jacksonville Jaguars fan and was a season ticket holder for over 20 years. He always believed in the Jaguars and rooted for them… win or lose. He was famous for saying that this is going to be The Year – you heard it here first!

Tom was an avid reader and especially loved non-fiction about the Pacific Theater during World War II. His father served in the Navy as a Seabee primarily in the Pacific Theater so Tom's interest in that Arena was founded by his father's service.

Tom was a great father and husband, always calm, cool and collected. I suppose he got a little of that Clint Eastwood/ John Wayne swag from all those westerns he watched. He loved telling scary stories to all the kids and looked forward every year to Halloween and July 4th. When all the kids were young, he would plan all year for a spectacularly scary scene or event on Halloween night before the kids went trick or treating. Then in later years, he loved sitting out front and waiting for all the neighborhood kids to come by so he could give handfuls of candy to every one of them. He also looked forward to the 4th of July so he could feed the family and give the most spectacular fireworks show in the neighborhood. He loved his family and they all loved him back!

Tom is survived by his wife of 34 years Patsy Starling Crumpton, children Elizabeth Crumpton of San Antonio TX, Justin Perry (Chrissy) of Deland FL, and Jenna Kobischen (Jason & grandson Caden) of Jacksonville FL, mother Frances Crumpton, and sister Joanne Culbreth (Don), niece Randi Green (Jenn), and nephew TJ Breedlove (Daniela). His father Densel (Dick) Crumpton predeceased Tom in 2010.

A celebration of Tom's life will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, January 24th at the Arlington Park Funeral Home, 6920 Lone Star Rd, Jacksonville, Florida 32211. Inurnment with military honors to follow in Arlington Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Arlington Park Funeral Home - (904) 724-6384.
