Obituary of Vonnette Owens

Vonnette Wilson Owens graduated to Heaven Friday night, November 20,2015, just 10 days shy of her 95th birthday. She was given her wings by her husband, William L. Owens, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.C.Wilson,and beloved younger sister Laverne Wilson Anderson and brother-in-law, Brannan Anderson.

Born and raised in Grenada, Mississippi, November 30, 1920, she graduated from Blue Mountain College.

She met her future husband, Bill, when he was stationed in Grenada before he was sent to serve in the U.S. Army in Africa during World War 2. Vonnette and Bill married right after VE (Victory in Europe)Day in 1945 and moved to Auburn where Bill got an Engineering degree on the GI Bill and Vonnette worked for a dean as his assistant.

Vonnette and Bill had one child, a daughter, Susan Owens Hamilton, and lived and raised her in Birmingham, Alabama, until their retirement together from Alabama Power/Southern Company on the same day in 1982. Vonnette also worked for A. and A. Ash Jewelers in Birmingham several years prior to joining the Power Company. Vonnette had several loves she shared with Bill and Susan in no particular order: football, AUBURN, tailgating trips to Auburn, the Jacksonville Jaguars, Big Band music, playing cards, Bridge Club, Supper Club and making the best ever homemade ice cream and bread pudding! Most of all, Vonnette loved Jesus and singing from the old Cokesbury Hymnal, while serving actively in her various Churches over the years.

She leaves behind many lives touched by her wit and amazing knowledge of all things Football/Auburn! Men often commented on how much football knowledge she had! She even called her daughter who was on a trip to advise her when David Garrard replaced Byron Leftwich at QB for the Jaguars! Vonnette was incapacitated the last 7 years of her life at Regents Park Nursing Home but still inspired the staff there as the Matriarch of the facility. Hope she doesn't give too many instructions to The Lord God Almighty in her new home!!
