Obituary

Winthrop "Johnny" Mann Johnson, Jr. of Jacksonville, Florida passed away peacefully on Saturday April 30, 2016 at Lifecare of Jacksonville at the age of 90. Winthrop is preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Carolyn "Lynn" Johnson (Coalson); Parents, Winthrop Mann Johnson Sr. and Moncie Johnson; and his sister Gloria Scarborough. He will be missed by his four children: Carol Goodale, Fabienne Hourihane, Carol Ann Vance and Winthrop Mark Johnson; Eight grandchildren; Four great grandchildren; Nieces, Nephews and others.
Winthrop was born in Weehawken, NJ on April 19, 1926, and in 1937 the family relocated to Jacksonville, Florida. After graduating from Baldwin High School in 1944 he joined the U.S. Navy and served over two years during World War II. Winthrop continued on to the University of Florida and earned his Master's Degree in Education in 1953.
Winthrop was a Christian and believed in Jesus Christ as his savior and was a member of the Church of Jacksonville. He was an avid Gator fan and was always wearing the colors orange and blue. He had a great love for many sports, especially football, and also spent many years coaching school basketball teams. He loved to listen to music and had a great singing voice. He sang his favorite songs and recorded them to share with family members.
Mr. Johnson was employed with Duval County School Board for 33 years. He began his career in education as a teacher and later was Assistant Principal at Lake Shore Junior High School and then Principal at Stilwell Junior High School. He then served in the Christian School system and was Principal of Beaches Chapel School and North Jacksonville Academy until retirement.
The funeral service will be held graveside on May 5, 2016 at 11:00am at Arlington Park Cemetery, 6920 Lone Star Road, with Chuck Linton officiating.
