Obituary

Former Librarian at Ft. Caroline Elementary School

Mrs. John Taylor "Zelda" was born 6 September 1926. She graduated from the Fassifern School, Cashier, N.C. in 1943 and from the University of Miami ca. 1946.  While at the University of Miami, Zelda majored in business administration and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma .

Zelda met John Dempsey Taylor, a former member of Douglas MacArthur's honor guard on a blind date. They married 25th June 1947 and resided in Miami Florida, celebrating their 58th anniversary shortly before John's death in 2015.

The couple had two children including Glenn Allen Taylor b. July 3 1954.

Although she considered a happy marriage to be among her achievements, Zelda also had a career in education. She served as a substitute teacher at Kenwood Elementary school and later as a 4th grade teacher, then school librarian at Vineland Elementary School, both in Miami. She returned to the University of Miami where she was awarded a MA in Library Science.

The Taylor family moved to Jacksonvile, Fl in (1967). There, Zelda served as  head Librarian at Ft. Caroline Elementary School until she retired in 1983.

When public schools in Jacksonville were integrated many teachers staged a walkout. Zelda persuaded teachers to kindly care for all children regardless of race. For this the B'nai B'rith Society honored her with an award for improving relations between the races.

After retirement Zelda and John enjoyed grandchildren, square-dancing and a cottage in North Carolina. Zelda also founded a group to plant a butterfly garden at Regency Library.

When she turned 90, Zelda's health began to fail. Thanks go to all who offered extraordinarily loving care during  her last years including  Mary Jane Cordez, Lovlie, Merlene Bordeaux, the Atria of San Pablo and others too numerous to mention.

Zelda passed away at the age of 95. She is survived by two half brothers, a child, 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Ft. Caroline Methodist Church in Arlington, Florida or The Wyannie Malone Historical Museum,  Abaco Bahamas.
